Although mapping is a method of gathering, ordering and recording knowledge, all maps are to some extent the products of imagination. No map is ever the truly objective description of a place that it purports to be.

Maps are designed as aids or guides for those undertaking journeys.

There is an inherent narrative aspect to any graphic work designed to represent a place, assert ownership, describe a route, record a journey, or chart newly explored places.

The greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.
These are simply gorgeous! Thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you so much!

Oh, I love these–and the metaphors they suggest. The whole concept of mapping…it seems to inhere in the human genome, which is a kind of map as well.
I was thinking – maybe this mapping process become more intriguing with age, as there become gradually more and more dots to connect … but also more paths not taken?
Wonderful work and words, Sigrun. I’m a map-lover from way back so artwork that references maps interests me. Each one of these is enjoyable to look at and the way you interspersed the text kept me fascinated.
Thank you! I’m interested in looking at maps also like a kind of palimpsest, and to play with this kind of layering in my paintings. Creating – so to speak – a palimpsest of imaginary places …
