Dancing tulips

Samuel John Peploe ( 1871 – 1935) was a Scottish Post-Impressionist painter,  noted for his still life works and for being one of the group of four painters that became known as the Scottish Colourists.

Samuel John Peploe: Tulips – The Blue Jug

Notice the tempo in this painting. It is as if the tulips are dancing. It is quite rare to find so much movement in a still life. The liveliness in the motif is achieved not only via the beautiful swirling lines of the flower stems, but also through Peploe’s use of complimentary colours. Notice how your eyes jump; red, green, purple, yellow, blue … orange – like small bursts of sensation all over the picture plane.
