Spitting Toxotes

Every morning I receive news from a web-site called forskning.no, a site passing on research news from all kinds of areas. The other day I learned that there is a fish that seems to be able to recognize fases, even if it – as usually go for fish – lacks neocortex.

I had never before heard about this fish, and while the face-recognizing thing was more than interesting, what struck me as even more fascinating, is how this fish can hunt down insects by spiting at them.

This sketch is done from an old black/white engraving.

  1. I have been awake for hours because of pain from recent surgery. When I found this post in my inbox my morning took a turn for the better. I now know there is a spitting fish that might recognize me. I don’t believe in miracles but I still find the word useful for expressing my wonderment at the vast mosaic in which we are privileged to live. Thanks Sigrun.

      Thank you, Ronald!
There are so many strange things in this world, aside from political crisis & terror & people being mean to one another and the planet, there are plants and animals going about their life as if they couldn’t care less about us. It is kind of liberating to know – I think.

I hope this day will be a good one!
      All the best,
      Sigrun

    I am loving your sketches!
These days I am reading “Sex on Earth” A Journey Through Nature’s Most Intimate Moments, by Jules Howard. It is interesting and funny and so much more relevant than all our human stupidity.

The book sounds great – have to have a look.
      Happy Friday!
