It may be a good idea to try to copy the willow tit – which actually lowers its body temperature at night, to reduce heat loss and save energy.
Any better suggestions?!
Things are not as they are seen, nor are they otherwise

Small birds also use shivering as a technique to generate heat and maintain body temperature. Works for humans, too, although personally I prefer a nice warm fire.
It resembles our black-capped chickadee! And your post inspired me to explore whether the chickadee also employs regulated hypothermia…which it does. Here is a site where you can see how much the willow tit resembles the North American bird: http://www.nwf.org/news-and-magazines/national-wildlife/birds/archives/2008/backyard-birding.aspx
But I have no better solutions to the cold but hot soup and Glühwein and a woodstove or hearth fire!
