life is a passageway

– a follow up on Do Ho Suh

I am very interested in how Do Ho Suh works with space, how he investigate cultural displacement and the sense of home.

Several of his projects, like the one shown in this video, are about carrying memories of intimate places from his childhood over into new places, new contexts and new times. His poetic use of materials echoes dream-scenes; swift, transcendent, luminous.

His art is at the same time very original and recognizable, spectacular and sensual, masculine and feminine. It is both minimalistic and extravagant. Easy to understand, but not something one can fully comprehend. Just like good poetry.

I really hope I’ll get the chance to see his work live someday!
