Less is more

Pablo Giorgelli’s film Las Acacias has the simplest imaginable plot: a man, a woman & a baby, sharing a drive from Paraguay to Buenos Aires. The man, a truck driver, has done the trip many times before, the woman are going to Buenos Aires to get a job. This is the first time they meet, spending hours together, mostly in silence. How this plot can become a great movie I really do not know – but it does!

Silence, it turns out, can actually be very telling. And if you, like me, have a weakness for beautiful pictures, you really should give this film a chance – !

By the way – Las Acacias received the Cannes Caméra d’Or for best first film.

Oh, yes, I feel the same – this film is wonderful! The gentle, subtle observation and portrayal of people and place. We don’t need lurid action and noisy plot in order to be engaged; we just need the camera to look harder, and subtle acting. I admire the makers of this hugely and wish there were more like it.
