Great Expectations

Just the other day Sophie, of Live, Love & Learn, had a nice post on Woolf. In her post Sophie mentioned Alexandra Harris’s biography Virginia Woolf, which I (no surprise…) got very curious about.

So I ordered it.

(If this Woolf obsession of mine will continue, I really have to try to cleared another meter or two in my already overloaded bookshelf …)

Yesterday Blogging Woolf had a note on the same book, with the link to a review.

My expectation of Harris’s book is growing steadily, day by day … Have you read it?

I really enjoyed the book. I thought she had a quite different approach from other biographers. It was very readable but still thought provoking and sent me straight back to reading Woolf! I came to it from her wonderful ‘Romantic Moderns’ book which covers writers and artists in the whole interwar period including Woolf – another one for your shelf?

Good! I think I will enjoy it too.
‘Romantic Moderns’ … I discovered it when I searched for the biography, and I had to put it in the basket as well. Since I’m starting to approach the visual Bloomsbury I consider it to be part of my new curriculum – wouldn’t you agree?!

      1. dianajhale says:

Absolutely – there is another one she co-edited that I also have called Modernism on Sea!

        oh – happy endlessness!

I haven’t read the book yet either, although I have blogged about it several times. Thanks for sharing the link to Blogging Woolf — and for adding the link to Sophie’s post. I love getting connected to other lovers of Woolf.

  3. Have you read Julia Briggs’ biography on Woolf–An Inner Life?

    1. Sigrun says:

No, I have not, have you?

      1. Yes. I recommend it.

      2. Sigrun says:

Thank you, will have a look for it!

Am anxiously awaiting your review of the Harris book, Sigrun, although you and Diana have me searching for it almost type this comment. The Romantic Moderns also sounds excellent. Thanks to both of you.

Just received her book yesterday … 🙂
